Fox Point Hurricane Barrier
Wait....that's a hurricane barrier? I thought it was just a cool bridge. Mmmm. Please explain.
Sorry. The photo is a bit confusing. They are not connected...the hurricane barrier is in the front and the fancy new bridge in the background. Two separate structural masterpieces in one photo:)
Oh, I can see that now. So how does the barrier work? For the water surge?
I think, I'm not exactly sure. Maybe it comes down before the storm comes in so the city doesn't flood? I have no idea. This is all speculation. Let's let the husband weigh in. He studied structures in architecture school:)
I think Kim's right. While I'm just a land-locked Midwesterner (telling people from Florida about hurricanes mind you), I imagine that if a massive Hurricane was headed our way, those giant door would close. That way, any raising of the water level would not flood downtown. One of the buildings downtown has a notch on the outside wall of the height of an old hurricane flood. We're trying to avoid that.
